Cotton signs with professional German team

Tekele Cotton has signed on with a professional German team, said Justin Haynes, an agent for the former Shocker guard.

And he’ll keep his favorite jersey colors and number.

A tweet Tuesday announced Cotton’s decision to sign on for the 2015-16 season with MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg (RIESEN).

Cotton graduated from Wichita State last year and spent the summer playing in the NBA summer league for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

RIESEN is a team out of Germany’s professional basketball league, Basketball Bundesliga.

According to a quote from an article on Basketball Bundesliga’s website, RIESEN’s coach, John Patrick, formerly of Stanford University, says the German team has similar defensive strategy to what Cotton is used to playing with, so “there should be a rapid familiarization process for Tekele.”

Haynes says Tekele will not only be playing in the German league but RIESEN will also regularly compete with other teams from the European countries that make up the EuroCup league. The NBA heavily scouts both leagues, Haynes says.

Cotton is one of three American rookies to sign onto the EuroCup league, the others being Aaron White (Iowa) and Royce O’Neale (Baylor).
