Wichita State Cricket Club to host weekend tourney

The world’s second most popular sport is showcasing this weekend in Wichita.

Wichita State’s Cricket Club is hosting a two-day, five-overs per inning cricket tournament Saturday and Sunday.

Teams will consist of six players and the matches will last approximately 45 minutes, said Sharat Chandra, the team’s contact.

Sponsored by the Indian Student Association, student players from all over the world are expected to participate in the weekend’s matches, including Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, Chandra said.

The Cricket Club recently won the title in the Two-State Cricket League, a tournament that took them four months to win. The Club hopes this weekend’s event will attract prospective players hoping to join a team.

“People at WSU are crazy about cricket,” Chandra said. “We are [hosting the tournament] to encourage it. I promise it’s going to be exciting.”

The tournament starts at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Planeview Park off 31st Street and Oliver.
