Brian Regan to bring observational comedy to Wichita

He recently had a cameo in the movie “Top 5,” made his 27th appearance on “The Late Show” with David Letterman, guest starred on Jerry Seinfeld’s web-hit “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” in 2012 and now he’ll be performing in Wichita at 7:30 p.m. April 16 at the Cotillion.

Aside from the movie and guest appearance on Seinfeld’s web series, Brian Regan is back in Wichita to do what he loves — stand up, he said.

“[My comedy] is Kierkegaardian with Machiavellian undertones,” Regan said, laughing. “I used to say this as an answer just to be ridiculous. I said that to a reporter once and he said, ‘Oh yeah. I can see that.’ And I was like, ‘Oh no. This guy thinks I’m being serious. That’s gonna be the headline in some newspaper somewhere. ’KIERKEGAARDIAN WITH MACHIAVELLIAN UNDERTONES IS HEADED OUR WAY.’”

Don’t expect to hear Wichita or Wichita State related jokes, though. Regan’s an observational comic who jokes about himself, his place in the world and his observations of the world, he said.

“If I got into town and saw something, I might mention it on stage,” he said. “It’s funny ‘cause sometimes you can fake that you’re doing local jokes and people don’t know. You get on the stage and say, ‘What is the deal with your roads?’ And people laugh and you’re thinking, ‘This is so weird. I’m the only one in this room that doesn’t get these jokes.’”

He uses his theater background to come up with characterizations and different vocal tones to make fun of himself and his observations. His stand up is not just him, though. It’s the characters he creates on stage with himself by using voices and different facial expressions.

He admitted he wasn’t the best college student, so having a story printed in a school’s paper isn’t something he thought could happen.

“Somehow, I’ve managed to get to a point where I could get recognized by educational institutions,” Regan laughed, “so I’m honored if they want to throw my face anywhere in a publication there.”
