TOMS to be sold at RSC for charity

Starting today, Wichita State students have an opportunity to purchase a pair of TOMS shoes in preparation for “One Day Without Shoes,” a national initiative which aims to raise awareness for children in impoverished countries who lack education and health opportunities.

Shoes can be purchased from the Student Involvement front desk in Room 216 Rhatigan Student Center. The first 100 pairs of black or gray TOMS — men’s or women’s — will be sold for $30.

Students who pre-ordered TOMS can decorate their shoes from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 14 on the east patio of the RSC. Students will be provided painting supplies to decorate.m Prizes will also be given out for participation in various events.

TOMS shoes have been around for almost a decade. It gained popularity almost instantly with its one-for-one business model. For every TOMS shoe that is sold, a child in an impoverished country receives a pair for free.

“It’s important to show that WSU cares about other countries,” said Viviane Troung, Student Involvement office assistant and biology freshman.

In the past, TOMS shoes have been donated to children in over 40 different countries, such as Ethiopia, Rwanda, Swaziland and many more.

This is the first time WSU has participated in the global day.
