Fans rally before first MVC tournament game
It must be Shocker game day in St. Louis because the streets and sidewalks are filled with black and yellow.
Shocker car tags, stickers and flags make their way toward the Scottrade Center Friday morning after the first pep rally of the weekend.
Sylvia Schmidt said the place was “electric.”
Wichita State fans packed the Fox Spots Live bar and restaurant to get pumped before Friday’s noon game against the Southern Illinois Salukis — WSU’s first game of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.
Courtney Marshall, Alumni Association CEO and president, led the rally, which also featured Voice of the Shockers, Mike Kennedy, and color commentator Dave Dahl.
Dahl gave a lively speech to the crowd. He said WSU will take the MVC tournament championship “because we have the best band in the country, the best cheerleaders in the country and the best fans in the country.”
To which, a crowd of probably 300 Shocker fans gave a rousing cheer.
Fans are anticipating an exciting MVC tournament, which this year features two nationally-ranked basketball teams.
“it’s been a competitive tournament,” Schmidt said. “It’s been fun … It’s in my blood.”
