Shocker volleyball sweeps in Illinois

If the Shockers took a bus to Peoria, Ill., this weekend, the 13-hour ride didn’t affect them, as they not only swept Bradley, but Loyola, as well, in three sets.

After a bit of a roller coaster last weekend at Charles Koch Arena, Wichita State is beginning to gain momentum, winning their last three matches without giving a single set to opposing team.

Friday

The Shockers first faced the Bradley Braves, 0-13 overall.

WSU kept Bradley’s losing record going with sets of 25-20, 25-13 and 25-17.

The first set against Bradley was the Braves’ best as they were able to tie the Shockers at 11, and they even went on a 6-1 streak at one point.

However, with MaryAshton Floyd hitting .467 with nine kills, the Braves weren’t able to keep up after accumulating eight hitting errors, giving them a hitting percentage of only .216.

Bradley wasn’t able to recover after kills from Emily Hiebert and Mikaela Raudsepp, which gave WSU a two-point lead before they gained the next four points to bring the game to a Shocker win.

Coming off their first win, the Shockers started strong in the second set obtaining a four-point lead early in the game. At one point, they were even up 10 points against Bradley at 15-10.

With the second set ending 25-13, the Shockers had a sideout percentage of 84 percent compared to Bradley’s 43 percent.

With 18 kills in the last set, the Shockers finally silenced the Braves at 25-17 with Abbie Lehman as a standout in all three sets. She had a killing average of  .615.

Saturday

Saturday’s game against Loyola was just as exciting for the Shockers as they beat the Ramblers 0-3 with tight scores of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-22.

Loyola proved to be a tougher match for WSU as the Ramblers were 5-8 and 1-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference.

However, the Shockers battled against Loyola in the first set with impressive performances from not only Hiebert, who had 36 assists, but also Lehman, who had 12 kills and was hitting .500.

Loyola grabbed the lead early at 5-1, but the Shockers battled until they tied the score at 12, utilizing a block by Raudsepp and Lehman.

Floyd had a game changing kill, bringing WSU’s lead to 24-21, and the Shockers were finally able to seal the win at 25-23.

The second set had the same score of 25-23, but the Shockers’ hitting percentage improved to .281, despite Loyola taking another early lead of 7-3.

Katie Reilly helped the Shockers pull ahead of the Ramblers with a kill at 11-9, but the Ramblers responded, taking the lead from WSU at 17-12.

WSU battled back until a kill from Floyd and service ace from Reilly brought the Shockers within one point of Loyola.

After a 4-0 streak from the Shockers making the score 23-21, the teams fought until Reilly’s kill gave WSU the win.

The Shockers started strong in the third set against Loyola taking an early lead, 15-9.

After three straight kills from Lehman, the game looked to be over at 24-15, but Loyola used a seven-point streak to come back 24-22.

Lehman came out swinging once again and finished the game for WSU at 25-22 with another kill.

The Shockers play again at 7 p.m. Friday at Charles Koch Arena against the University of Northern Iowa.
