Hippodrome tradition carries on next week
Hippodrome week, a tradition at Wichita State since 1928, begins next week. It’s a weeklong series of events on campus that features competitions, activities and performances from WSU students. It begins next week.
The performances include a talent show by WSU students and skits performed by Greek organizations. Five sororities and five fraternities will perform.
Amber Sevart is the chair of the campus traditions committee with Student Involvement. She organized the events and practice times for Hippodrome skits.
“Hippodrome encompasses campus spirit,” Sevart said. “It is a chance to see the talent of WSU students.”
While performances are next week, Greek organizations are practicing their skits this week.
Isaac Styne is the vice president of recruitment for Delta Upsilon. He said the Hippodrome performances come with mixed emotions.
“It’s a lot of fun, and you get to meet new people,” Styne said. “But there is also a lot of stress.”
Many of the skits started during winter break and have been worked on for three months.
“There are a lot of rehearsals and late nights,” Styne said.
To Styne, Hippodrome is a chance to show what his fraternity can do and meet new people.
“Hippodrome is a great way to advertise our fraternity,” Styne said, “and also to get back to campus.”
