Men’s tennis sweeps Illinois State, Bradley on Senior Weekend

Wichita State’s men’s tennis team had their senior weekend when they played against Illinois State and Bradley at home.

WSU defeated both opponents 4-0 to kick off conference play and send the seniors off with smiles.

“What a great weekend for our two seniors, Ilija Cuic and Guillermo Nicol,” head coach Brad Louderback said. “We dedicated this weekend to our seniors who have done so much for us, and our team delivered.”

In the first match of the weekend, the Shockers played Illinois State and were led by their seniors.

The team got wins in doubles from Nicol/Guillermo de Vilchez and from Tin Ostojic/Tomislav Gregurovic, 8-2 and 8-6, respectively.

In singles play, Cuic was the first off the court at the No. 1 position with a win in straight sets 6-0, 6-4 to push the WSU lead to 2-0. Ostojic followed with a 7-5, 6-1 win, and the match was clinched with a win from Nicol, who won 6-3, 6-2.

“It’s difficult to express all the emotions you feel as a senior,” Nicol said. “All I can really say is thank you. I’ve had excellent teammates and an excellent coach. I learned a lot here, in both the classrooms and on the courts.”

In the second match, WSU faced the Bradley Braves. The teams took the doubles courts and were quickly off, as WSU won on all three courts to take the doubles point.

“Our doubles is picking up. We played better doubles today,” Louderback said. “I thought we did a good job all weekend focusing on the matches and getting better as we go.”

The Shockers led 2-0 after Bradley’s No. 4 singles player had to retire the match with a sprained ankle.

Cuic was once again the first off the courts with yet another straight sets victory when he won 6-0, 6-3. Bradley fought off multiple attempts from WSU to clinch the match early, but Ostojic eventually won his match 6-3, 7-5 to give the Shocks the 4-0 win.

“My career has been great. I really love Wichita,” Cuic said. “The people make the place, and the way WSU cares about their athletes says a lot. Wichita State is just such a high-class program.”

WSU still has two more dual matches left in the season before the MVC Team Championships begin. The team next plays at 1 p.m. Friday when they travel to Carbondale, Ill. to play Southern Illinois.
