SGA proposes amendments

Wichita State’s Student Government Association considered changes to the Legislative Journal last Wednesday.

The journal contains the rules and procedures for SGA’s operations.

SGA Legislative Director Andrew Longhofer said the amendments clarify and establish the “rules and procedures” for each journal section.

One amendment makes changes to how SGA funds students and organizations.

The amendment to the “organization and student funding” sets limits to the money available for each student and organization requesting funding. It also clarifies the procedure to apply for funding.

With the amendments, individuals can make one funding request each semester with a $1,000 limit each fiscal year.

Organizations would also be limited to one funding request each semester with a $2,000 limit each fiscal year.

The amendment also sets limits on what the money can be spent on. This includes travel, housing and registration for conferences for individuals. For organizations, the amount they can request for advertising, venue reservations and money paid to speakers or presenters is limited.

Longhofer said the new limitations would allow SGA to conserve money for more organizations and students. However, he said it could also mean SGA will be funding each organization and individual “a little bit less.”

Longhofer also said the purpose of the change is to create a “shift in mindset” for individuals and organizations that request funding.

“SGA funding isn’t something that individuals are entitled to,” he said. “[It’s] something that we are extending in order to make new opportunities possible.”

Longhofer said the changes to funding also serve to clarify some confusion that occurred last semester.

“There was a lot of work that the treasurer had to do to explain things to people,” Longhofer said. “The process got muddied when people didn’t submit the right things to the right people at the right time. The journal wasn’t helping them out. It’s a lot clearer now.”

Apart from changes to funding, SGA also considered amendments to how SGA’s records are maintained, how SGA members are elected to committee positions and how they are paid.

SGA will meet to consider and vote on the amendments on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Rhatigan Student Center, room 203.
