SGA to host comedian with SAC

Wichita State University Student Government Association dealt with a full agenda of five funding bills, two resolutions, a vote on an amendment and the first read of another amendment Wednesday.

One of the funding bills that will be voted on this Wednesday moves $70,000 from SGA’s organizational funding allocation to the SGA office fund. The amount would then be earmarked for a large event SGA hopes to execute alongside the Student Activities Council.

The event will bring a comedian to WSU to perform on campus. Last year, SAC brought famed comedian Bo Burnham to WSU. This year they hope to get someone just as “big.”

SAC President and SGA Senator Shannon Glover said the comedians being considered are Whitney Cummings, Brad Sherwood and Colin Mochrie, Nick Swardson and Bill Hader. Most of the $70,000 would be going toward artist fees.

SGA will be contributing funding for the event while SAC contributes their experience programming events. This includes coordinating, publicity and hiring a comedian for the event.

Glover said she hopes working on a large event like this will bring SGA and SAC closer together.

“I think that working on something this big will really benefit both of us,” Glover said. “Just to have something solid and something big I think is really important for the two organizations.”

Even though the $70,000 is being transferred from the organizational funding allocation, SGA Treasurer Matt Conklin said it does not affect funding for student organizations.

More than $90,000 remains from last year in the account’s “carry forward.” Conklin said the carry forward could be compared to a savings account. All unspent money from the organizational allocation goes in at the end of the fiscal year. More than $16,000 remains in the organizational funding allocation provided for the fiscal year.

“If the Senate feels this is a good use of funds to promote student life and engage students, then the money’s there,” Conklin said.

Up to $40,000 was also recommended from unallocated student fees to help fund Convocation in 2014. Student fees has never been used in the past for the back to school event, but was recommended due to budget cuts.

Wade Robinson, Vice President of Campus Life and University Relations, said this is to be used as a backstop in case the amount can’t be covered by sponsor contributions.

Robinson assured SGA that sponsor contributions are being sought for the entire amount.

Both funding bills and a $25,000 request from unallocated student fees for the WSU Dance Program will be voted on this Wednesday.

SGA also approved funding for one individual to present research at a conference and the Nerd Union organization for supplies for a “LARPing” project. LARP stands for “live action role-playing.”

SGA also voted to approve changes to how future SGA elections will operate. The amendments change everything from how the election commission is allowed to sanction candidates to enforcing budget caps on campaigns.
