Shockerthon raises over $57,000 for Children’s Miracle Network

While some Wichita college students spent this weekend’s money dancing at Club Rodeo, on Saturday, others danced at the Heskett Center to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network.

Shockerthon, previously known as the Wichita State Dance Marathon, is a 12-hour activity put sponsored by the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The goal was to raise $50,000 for CMN at Via Christi Hospital. However, they exceeded their goal by raising $57,165.

More than 400 students and community members registered for the noon to midnight event held from noon to midnight on the second floor of the Heskett Center. Shockerthon featured Zumba and collaborative dances. Participants stood for 12 hours in honor of the kids who physically can’t.

“There isn’t a penalty for sitting down,” SAE member Alan Puertas Garces said jokingly. “People take it very seriously. Some come and go throughout the day, and some stay for the entire 12 hours.”

Children and families of CMN arrived for interactive activities around 4 p.m. After a warm introduction, families participated in face paintings, inflatables, arts and crafts and even some dancing.

“When the kids are here, we really focus on what they [want to] do,” said Jill Bosley, Director of CMN at Via Christi.

Since 2011, Shockerthon has raised about $100,000 for CMN. For the philanthropic event, SAE holds an executive committee of Greeks and non-Greeks who contact corporate sponsors and businesses to donate money for every participant that registers.

This year’s sponsors included Cessna United Friendship Fund, Meritrust Credit Union, Mel Hambelton Ford and Shocker alumni.
