Last Saturday, the Shocker Rowing team went to the Head of the Oklahoma in Oklahoma City.

“We did pretty well,” said head coach Calvin Cupp. “There was a lot of good competition. There were a lot of Big 12 Schools here: Kansas State University, the University of Kansas, the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma, to name a few.”

The Men’s Open 2x came in fifth out of eight teams. The Men’s Collegiate 4+ came in fifth of fifteen teams, with only 6.9 seconds between fifth place and gold, and the Women’s Collegiate 4+ came in 20th out of 36 teams.

The Men’s Collegiate 8+ came in fourth out of 13 teams, while the Women’s Collegiate 8+ placed 16th out of 21 teams.

In the Novice Division, the Men’s Novice 8+ took the gold and the Men’s Novice 4+ placed fifth out of nine teams.

“The first race is a great learning experience for the novices, and this [is] a nice regatta to start with because of the total quality of the regatta and the mix of head style racing with the Night Sprints,” Cupp said.

During the Night Sprints, the Men’s Open 2x Grand Final finished fifth. The Men’s Collegiate 4+ Grand Final placed second, only .06 seconds away from the gold, and the Women’s Collegiate 4+ Petite Final placed third, only .07 seconds away from silver.

The Men’s Collegiate 8+B Petite Final came in fourth, the Men’s Collegiate 8+A Grand Final placed sixth and the Women’s Collegiate 8+ Petite Final came in second.

“The Novice Men 8+ had a great race for the gold,” Cupp said. “The Varsity women and men both finished higher in the 8+ this year than they did last year. It was a good day of racing for the Shockers.”
