Women’s tennis returns home after long road stand

The Wichita State women’s tennis team has been playing matches on the road for more than a month now, a seven-game stretch that included playing three different ranked opponents and two conference rivals.

There hasn’t been a home match since the Shockers beat Creighton 6-1 on March 3, and they finally play at Sheldon Coleman Tennis complex this weekend against Illinois State and Bradley. Let’s rewind the last month for the tennis team and summarize what we’ve missed.

First up was the University of Texas at Arlington, where the Shockers steamrolled the opponent winning 4-1 with the doubles point and wins in singles coming from Rebecca Pedrazzi, Julia Schiller and Montse Blasco Fernandez.

After a day off, WSU traveled to No. 19 Texas Christian University and couldn’t keep up with the Horned Frogs. The teams did not play the doubles point and TCU took all six singles matches. WSU lost 6-0.

The next day WSU traveled to No. 54 North Texas. The Shockers dropped the double point and the only point won by WSU was won by Blasco Fernandez over Ilona Serchenko 6-3, 6-2. The Shockers fought hard and were ahead in two different matches when play was suspended, WSU lost 4-1.

A well-deserved week off gave WSU the energy it need when facing the College of Charleston. The Shockers won 5-2. It was a highly contested match where WSU dug deep to gain the points they did, with a marathon match from Schiller winning 7-5, 4-6, 10-7.

Playing No. 59 Missouri was tough sledding for the team, where the only point again came from Blasco Fernandez, who has won three straight singles victories to this point. WSU lost 6-1.

Now to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to face conference rival Northern Iowa. The Shockers made quick work of the Panthers winning every point, flexing their conference dominance.

Ending this grueling seven straight away matches the Shockers played Drake. Starting off in good standing WSU won the doubles point. The Shockers had big wins from freshmen Pedrazzi and Schiller to tilt the match in Shocker favor and gain victory 4-3 over the Bulldogs.

First serve on Saturday against Illinois State is set for 1 p.m. at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
