Nothing speeds up romance like standing on newspapers.

No, seriously. Imagine a game where you and your partner are competing against another couple to see which pair can stay on the newspaper the longest.

The catch is that you have to fold the newspaper in half each time the music stops playing, forcing the duo closer and closer into each other’s arms.

“It will give them a good chance to get to know each other,” said Prabhjit Bagga, president of the Association of Hindu Students in America at Wichita State.

The game is one of many interactive activities planned for Saturday’s Masquerade Ball, hosted by AHINSA and held at the Marcus Welcome Center.

The ball goes from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. and costs $10 for couples, $7 for single guys and $5 for single girls.

AHINSA hosts numerous events a year, mostly related to Hindu holidays. This time they wanted to change it up and decided to make Valentine’s Day the focal point.

“We wanted to do something that’s more like a world culture,” Bagga said. “We are organizing this event because we want people to know why everyone celebrates Valentine’s Day.”

Saturday’s ball requires formal attire and will have the feel of a prom, opposed to your usual club scene. Masks will be provided at the door and slow dances will take place every 20 to 25 minutes.

Drinks and snacks will be available, as well as a photo booth with different props to play with. Besides dancing and food, AHINSA hopes to help teach everyone the real meaning behind Valentine’s Day.

“What we observed was that everyone celebrates Valentine’s Day, but not everyone knows the real meaning behind it,” Bagga said. “So we wanted to educate them about that while also having fun.”

Tickets can be purchased in the Rhatigan Student Center today and tomorrow from noon to 2 p.m. and at the Marcus Welcome Center doors on Saturday night.
