Shocker women’s tennis comes up short against K-State

After a fast start, the Wichita State women’s tennis team fell short to Kansas State on Saturday at Wichita Country Club.

The Shockers won the first match of the night, but were not able to ride the hot start to a win as No. 45 KSU downed No. 65 WSU, 4-2.

“We played really well in the doubles and to get (that) point was a good start,” WSU coach Colin Foster said. “It wasn’t our day, but we’ve got to bounce back and we’ve got a challenging schedule ahead.”

The first doubles team was the only one to face any opposition from the Wildcats and lost 6-8.

WSU would end up finding its groove, winning 8-4 in the second match with freshmen Rebecca Pedrazzi and Carla Venticinque providing a spark. In the third and final doubles match, the veteran combo of Montse Blasco Fernandez with Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul won 7-2.

“It was a great effort. Kansas State is really good in the singles,” Foster said. “We gave ourselves an opportunity to win, but we came up a little bit short.”

Blasco Fernandez was also the only Shocker to come away with a singles victory. She took the first set of her singles match 6-3. After an early break in the second set, she found herself down 3-0. She was able to calm herself after a moment between games and came away with a 6-4 win in the second set to take the match.

“She was playing me well,” Blasco Fernandez said. “I was making a lot of mistakes, so I tried to play with safer targets and it worked well.”

Shocker women’s tennis continues Monday morning against No. 20 Purdue at 10 a.m. at Wichita Country Club.
