A humble Shocker’s journey to an NCAA record

Abbie Lehman credits coach Chris Lamb, the WSU volleyball staff and the rest of the team for her current success — but never herself.

At the match against Bradley University Saturday night, the middle blocker tied the NCAA record with 15 kills out of 15 attempts. While her name will remain within the pages of college volleyball history, Lehman said she prefers to praise those who contributed to this achievement.

“They’re great and they’ve taught me so much already,” she said. “I was definitely not the player I am when I came in here.”

The Newton, Kan. native started out as a basketball player, yet she changed her mind once she met Lamb.

“I was actually gonna go play basketball with my sister or go to Pitt State and play,” she said. “When ‘Lambo’ recruited me he convinced me to go here.”

However, Lehman said she stands by her choice to play volleyball since the first day she became a Shocker.

“I’m so glad I chose volleyball,” she said.

Lehman deemed her peers the best aspect of playing for WSU and noted their friendship boosts teamwork.

“They’re a built-in frame,” she said. “We’re all really good friends and we all get along well. We’re always there for each other on the court and off the court. We’ve always been growing in practice and getting better every day.”

She said the team’s continuous work on individual performances has improved their overall execution — they have swept their last six opponents, as Lehman played an instrumental role throughout these victories.

“We’ve been fixing a lot of the individual stuff and then working on new line-ups and getting into the groove of things,” she said.

At the press conference after the Bradley match Saturday, Lehman revealed how she planned to celebrate her latest accomplishment.

“Go out to dinner with the parents,” she said.
