SGA approves $70,000 in funding

The Wichita State Student Government Association approved more than $70,000 worth of funding requests at Wednesday’s Senate meeting without questions or debate.

Many organizations and individuals received funding for trips and projects.

The requests were passed without senators voting individually. Instead, the voting was done in a simpler “all in favor/all opposed” fashion. This is allowed by Robert’s Rules of Order, which SGA follows.

SGA adviser Wade Robinson reminded the senators to not make decisions so quickly and to ask questions for clarification before voting.

The reminder worked, and senators were full of questions when it was time for student organization status to be approved. The Shocker Investment Society and Mu Phi Epsilon, a music honor society, were up for approval. Mu Phi Epsilon was granted full status to be a Recognized Student Organization.

Questions were raised over the Shocker Investment Society and what control they would have over money at Wichita State. Drew Hodson, SGA senator and member of Shocker Investment Society, said the purpose of the group was to teach students about investing and the feeling of gaining and losing money. This seemed to appease the curious senators, and they voted the group to provisional status, the highest status a new organization can have.
