The Community Psychology Association is holding open auditions for the theater piece “The Vagina Monologues” this week. The piece, about all aspects of womanhood, will be performed in February, Julia Siwierka, director of “The Vagina Monologues,” said.

Auditions are open to anyone who was born with a vagina or who has lived experiences as a woman, Siwierka said.

“There is one stipulation,” Siwierka said, “and the one stipulation is that there are no parts for cisgender men.”

“The Vagina Monologues” is not just about exploitation or mistreatment, Siwierka said. It’s also celebratory and empowering.

“The media tries to paint this picture of an ideal woman who looks a certain way and acts a certain way, but that’s not really the reality,” Siwierka said. “So many pieces kind of say, ‘No, that’s not at all what’s going on. I’m angry at the way I’m being represented because that’s not actually who I am.’ Many of our pieces really speak to that and say, ‘Enough is enough.’”

Siwierka said that while the play focuses on women, it speaks to men as well.

“It’s a powerful learning experience for everyone,” Siwierka said.

Siwierka said “The Vagina Monologues” is an opportunity to make sure that issues that are important to women are talked about.

“There was frustration with the hesitation to talk about these issues on campus,” Siwierka said. “We like to brush them under the rug and pretend they don’t happen.”

Siwierka said “The Vagina Monologues” was last performed on campus about 10 years ago and is happy to bring it back.

All proceeds from the event go to the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center.
