Volleyball wins first two of weekend series
Volleyball claimed victories in the first two games of their three-game road stretch.
Sophomore Giorgia Civita had a career-high 34 digs in the season opener against James Madison. WSU scored five of the last six set points in the first set to take the first match 27-25. James Madison pressured WSU to a fifth set after claiming the third and fourth sets.
On Sunday, WSU defeated Howard in four sets. Senior Tabitha Brown led with 16 kills.
WSU finishes their East Coast travel at Virginia Commonwealth on Monday. VCU has yet to win a game this season, having lost to North Carolina State and Washington State.
VCU finished last season with a 30-3 record and a 14-0 conference record in the Atlantic 10. The Rams lost in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament to Pittsburgh.
The Shockers won three sets to none when the two teams last met in 2013.
Around the AAC:
Houston, Tulane and South Florida each started the season 3-0.
Cincinnati, who finished one vote behind WSU in the AAC’s preseason poll, is 2-1 after falling to Miami (Fl) in five sets on Saturday.
Eastern Carolina, Central Florida, Tulsa, and Connecticut are each 2-1 to start the season.
Memphis and Temple are each 1-2 to open the season.
Southern Methodist is winless through two games.
The AAC as a whole was 14-3 on Friday, which was the best debut in conference history. Five AAC teams played into five sets, and all were victorious.
