(From left to right) Juniors Austin Shelby, Jeff Sherman, Maggie Koops and Carley Larson read the green at hole three and prepare for their next shots at MacDonald Public Golf Course last Friday. Shelby, Sherman, Koops and Larson won the annual intramural golf tournament in their respective team brackets.

The campus recreation-hosted intramural-golf tournament was held at MacDonald Public Golf Course last Friday afternoon.

For Maggie Koops and Carley Larson of team “What Wouldn’t Tiger Do,” Austin Shelby and Jeff Sherman of team “Beta Theta Pi” and Tanner Hottinger and Cole Seltzer of team “Getting the Dub,” the round of golf ended with a victory in their respective categories.

Out of the six teams present, “What Wouldn’t Tiger Do” took the championship in the women’s category while “Beta Theta Pi” took the championship in the fraternity category and “Getting the Dub” took the championship in the men’s category. Sherman and Shelby were also awarded overall champions for the third year in a row.

Tee off for the scramble-style tournament took place shortly before 2 p.m. and the first teams finished by 5:30 that evening.

Last Friday’s weather was a cause for concern, though it did not infringe on the tournament. Competitors had their eyes on the doppler radar for incoming rain. Things stayed dry though players still had to cope with the cold front’s temperature drop and wind.

“The wind picked up and it got chilly,” Koops said. “I thrive [playing] in the wind being from southwest Kansas, it’s all I know. I don’t think it was a huge factor other than we weren’t dressed for the cold front to come through.”

Koops, a 14-year golf veteran, has participated in the annual intramural-golf tournament for the last three years. This is the first time the tournament has been held at MacDonald due to the closure of Wichita State’s Braeburn course.

“It was fun, I enjoyed MacDonald,” Koops said. “It held different challenges than Braeburn – the green speeds were a bit inconsistent and I think my whole group struggled to read breaks.”

Koops says she and Larson used each other’s shots in the scramble about fifty-fifty. They played their round alongside Sherman and Shelby, who, according to Koops, started intermittently rapping on the back nine.

“I know my group had fun,” Koops said. “It wasn’t too serious of a round, the boys were very good and Carley played extraordinarily well. Scrambles are always interesting.”
