No parking signs enforced north of campus

Residents in the neighborhoods north of Wichita State’s main campus wish to warn students about regulations regarding parking.

Drivers are not allowed to park between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Yale, Roosevelt, Gentry and 24th Street, and no parking at any time on the east side of Yale and the east side of Roosevelt.

Residents in the neighborhood voted last year to put up “no parking” signs because it blocked mailboxes, but students have started parking there again, said Gene Smith of the Northeast Heights Neighborhood Association.

“We really want to encourage students not to park at [Northeast Heights],” Smith said. “Some freshmen or just new students might not know the rules and we really don’t want them to get tickets.”

Smith said police are ticketing students that park in “no parking” zones, which are $15 a ticket, Smith said. Students parking in front of a driveway or mailbox pay $28.

“We really want people to know not to park there because they are starting to write tickets,” Smith said. “Students really have to be careful about these areas because tickets are getting expensive.”
