WSU tennis makes noise in Stillwater, Okla.

The Wichita State women’s tennis team has spent the last week in Stillwater, Okla., participating in the USTA/ITA Central Region Championship. The team’s performance held a bag of mixed results.

“The matches are really difficult to win at this level,” said Gabriela Porubin, a freshman on the team. “All of us did a great job — we have a really strong team.”

In the first round of qualifying play, WSU’s Aleksandra Trifunovic, Giulia Guidetti and Abby Stevens all moved on in straight sets. All three players won their second round matches and earned spots in the main draw.

In the first round of the main draw, WSU advanced three of four players behind a dominating win from the No. 5 seeded Julia Schiller, who routed her opponent 6-2, 6-0.

Schiller’s run was upset in the following round, but Porubin and Stevens both moved on to the round of 16. Neither player moved on in the next round, wrapping up the WSU singles representation in the tournament.

“The tournament had a really high level of competition,” Porubin said. “We just need to keep improving in each tournament we play in.”

All four WSU doubles teams made it into the round of 16 before Schiller/Porubin lost 8-7(4). The other doubles teams continued playing into the quarterfinals.

“We had some good results in doubles with three of four teams in the quarters,” junior Rebecca Pedrazzi said. “We worked hard after the first tournament, and we keep improving.”

The duo of Luca Pump/Trifunovic fell short of the finals when they ran into the No. 1 seeded team from Oklahoma State, losing 6-0, 6-3.

The women’s tennis team plays once more this fall when they travel to Dallas, Nov. 7-9.
