Shockers taken down by top 10 ranked Sooners

Coming off a 4-0 defeat against Tulsa, Wichita State men’s tennis traveled just down to road to Norman, Okla. where they met up with the Sooners for a rematch of last year’s NCAA men’s tennis tournament.

No. 63 Shockers were unable to avoid tournament repeat as they fell to the No. 9 tennis team in the nation, Oklahoma Sooners, 7-0.

Oklahoma showed comfort on their home court as they started off the day with the doubles point following a Dane Webb and Andrew Harris victory over WSU’s Tomislav Gregurovic and Tin Ostojic, 6-0. The doubles point was clinched when Oklahoma’s Peerakit Siributwong and Nick Papac defeated WSU’s Guillermo Nicol and Guillermo de Vilchez, 6-2.

Singles play was rough for the Shocks as they only won two sets of the combined 14 sets played (7 matches). Three of Oklahoma’s singles players are ranked in the top 40 singles players in the nation.

No. 40 Dane Webb defeated Gregurovic (6-2, 6-2), Austin Siegel over Nicol (6-1, 6-1), then to clinch the Sooner victory No. 5 Guillermo Alcorta defeated Ilija Cuic at the one position (6-1, 6-2).

The last two matches to finish were the two where the Shocks found set wins, one with Jocelyn Devilliers who fell to Alex Ghilea (6-0, 5-6, 6-3), the other came from Ostojic who fell to the No. 6 nationally ranked player Axel Alvarez (4-6, 6-4, 6-3).

Wichita State’s next in action Saturday, Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. They will play Georgia State in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Los Angeles, Cailf.
