Increased attendance expected for Lunar New Year celebration

For the fifth year in a row, the Wichita State University Office of Multicultural Affairs is hosting a celebration in honor of the Asian Lunar New Year.

The event is a chance for students and faculty to discover a variety of Asian traditions and for international students to show off their talents.

Due to construction, it was moved to the Heskett Center last year, but is back in the Rhatigan Student Center this year.

“Numbers were down last year due to construction, but this year, we have had students calling and asking about the event,” said Danielle Johnson, program coordinator of the Office of Multicultural events, “It should be easier to find in the RSC.”

The event is a chance to get information out about different Asian culture groups on campus but also for students to showcase traditions.

“A popular attraction at the event is the lion dance,” said Johnson. “It gives students a chance to perform and show their peers a bit of their culture.”

The lion dance is a tradition that is used to welcome good luck for the new year.

Katie Hoang, WSU alumnae, performed the dance a few years ago.

“It is a fun tradition to get dressed up in red and yellow and get lucky money,” said Hoang. Lucky money is given in red envelopes as a symbol of good fortune.

The event will boast a number of games with prizes sponsored by the OMA.

Activities will start at 11 a.m. Wednesday on the second floor of the RSC.
