Shocker Rowing dedicates newest shell to SGA

On Monday afternoon, the Shocker Rowing team gave back to the Student Government Association by dedicating a boat, named “SGA V,” to the organization to acknowledge their continuous contributions and support they provide the program.

“It feels amazing,” Shocker rower Shelby Fath said. “Saying thank you to them in person means a lot to me, and I hope it means a lot to them.”

SGA financially contributes to the rowing team. Shocker rowing head coach Calvin Cupp said their support helps with the initial start-up costs and financial needs.

“It would be a completely different program without the support of them,” Cupp said. “They provide a large portion of the starting funds that we operate with. That then allows us to manage our program and fundraise in other ways.”

Cupp said he continuously talks with his student athletes about the team’s responsibilities and obligations to represent the university because of the amount of support the team receives.

Cupp and Director of Campus Recreation Eric Maki advocate the importance of the two programs supporting each other.

“That’s kind of a wonderful life cycle,” Maki said. “When they recognize and get the opportunity to appreciate each other for what they bring to this campus, it only pays off to each group.”
