Women’s winning streak continues
The Wichita State women’s basketball team’s 2013-2014 season kicked off to the greatest start the program ever had with a 14-game winning streak.
The team has managed to remain undefeated in conference play and looks to be a top contender for the season conference title.
On Saturday, the team faced Illinois State and walked away with an explosive 74-58 win. Junior forward Kelsey Jacobs had a career-high 21 points and five blocked shots. Junior guard Alex Harden scored 19 points and 10 rebounds and senior center Michelle Price added 10 points and rebounds.
The team has been knocking conference opponents down with ease and remains undefeated in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Against conference opponents, the team has averaged 80.8 points each game while their opponents average 59.6 points a game.
The women’s offense has been at the top of its game, and head coach Jody Adams said she still doesn’t think all of the players are playing at their potential.
Junior Jamillah Bonner, Price and Harden are averaging double figures in scoring, with three more players trailing not far behind.
Defensively, the team has been forcing turnovers and outrebounding opponents in great margins. On average, the team grabs 37.9 rebounds, makes 10.1 steals and 4.6 blocks a game versus their opponents, who only snag 35.6 rebounds, 5.9 steals and 2.6 blocks per game.
Continuing to pull numbers similar to these creates the expectation that the team will win back-to-back conference titles.
Without a doubt in my mind, I believe that this year’s team has what it takes to bring home another conference title and go into the tournament.
Even in the post season tournament, the team has the potential to make it past the first round and even push into the second or third. The team can keep their conference record perfect by beating Indiana State at 7 p.m. tonight in this away game.
