VanVleet leads Shockers to school record

Fred VanVleet poured in 17 points and dished 7 dimes en route to an 82-67 beat down of the Southern Illinois Salukis.

Wichita State now is off to the best school start after surpassing the 1953-54 team lead by star Cleo Littleton. This year’s team is now 14-0 on the year and 1-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play.

The Salukis were led by freshman Sean O’Brien, who scored 19 points and had 8 rebounds.

Wichita State traded baskets with the Salukis until the Shockers took off on a 10-0 run and led 27-14 with 9:27 left in the first half.

The Salukis then scored a 3-pointer from O’Brien before the Shockers went on another run of 6 points. With 7:44 left in the half, the Shockers led 33-17.

From there Wichita State rolled the Salukis, leading at halftime with a score of 49-32.

The second half brought much of the same success and by the 9:00 minute mark, head coach Gregg Marshall had all five starters on the bench.

The final score was 82-67 Shockers. The Salukis now drop to 4-10 and the Shockers are off to the best start in school history at 14-0.
