Woman’s doubles tennis gives strong showing at ITA Regional Championships

Weather became an issue for women’s tennis and delayed singles plays in Norman, Okla., but the show goes on. With weather postponing outdoor play through the weekend, doubles took the main stage.

Blasco Fernandez and Rebecca Pedrazzi would not be thrown off by the weather, and took down Aspen Cervin and Stephanie Hollis 8-3 in the first match of the day. The duo earned impressive victories against five seeded Cierra Gayton-Leach and Tracy Dong of Missouri, 8-6, they then went on to win against 9-16 seed Karyn Guttormsen and Maria Alvarez of Oklahoma State, 8-6.

“It was exhausting playing that many matches, but we didn’t think about that at the time,” Fernandez said. “We were just working on being solid from the baseline and aggressive at the net.”

Their run would stop there, as they met up with three seed Mia Lancaster and Whitney Ritchie of host school Oklahoma. The Shocker duo would fall, 8-1.

“I think we had a pretty good performance in doubles,” Pedrazzi said. “We get more confidence with every match. I didn’t really focus on who was on the other side of the net.”

The other WSU doubles team of Abby Stevens and Julia Schiller went on a run of their own, starting off with a win over Kansas State duo Amina St. Hill and Livia Cirnu, 8-5.

Schiller and Stevens took down four-seed Kanyapat Narratana and Caria Tur Mari of Oklahoma State, 8-6. They then defeated 9-16 seeded duo from Minnesota, 8-5 before finally being stopped against Yang Pang and Kimberley-Ann Surin of Arkansas 8-3.

Singles resumed the following day. Schiller and Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul both fell to top 16 seeded opponents.

Fernandez and Pedrazzi both made it through their first matches to reach the round of 32. Fernandez won a three setter against Whitney Wofford of Oklahoma, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4. Pedrazzi beat Morven McCulloch of Iowa, 6-2, 6-3.

“The level of play was really high,” Pedrazzi said. “It is always challenging, but I just tried to play my best tennis. I had a ton of fun.”

Both would fall in the next round to wrap up the Shockers’ weekend.

“Montse and Becky both lost their second round singles matches to seeded opponents,” Coach Colin Foster said.

The team is back in action at the Longhorn Invitational, held on Nov. 8-10.
