This week’s brief news — April 30

Atkinson, Lowry named as Jabara Entrepreneurship Scholars

Kayla Atkinson and Caleb Lowry were announced as the 2023 recipients of the Professor Fran Jabara Scholarship in Entrepreneurship. The award is named after Fran Jabara, the founder of WSU’s Center for Entrepreneurship and aims to provide financial aid for two high-achieving entrepreneurship students.

Atkinson and Lowry will receive $32,500 over four years to attend Wichita State, beginning in Fall 2023.

Atkinson, a high school senior from Andover Central High School, hopes to open her own bakery and promote healthy eating through her baked goods. Lowry, an active athlete at Eisenhower High School in Goddard, plans to create a sport-oriented company.

WSU professors named as See Innovation Award recipients

In recognition of their innovative, biological-based research projects, three Wichita State professors have been awarded as this year’s John A. See Innovation Award recipients. The award is given to individuals or teams who construct a marketable concept and outline their supported costs.

Mechanical engineering professor Ramazan Asmatulu and biomedical engineering associate professor Nils Hakansson were recognized for their “Highly conductive and durable biosensors for wearable health monitoring systems” project. The duo aim to create a wearable microelectronic system to collect user health data and detect health abnormalities.

Associate professor in biological sciences Li Yao was awarded for his “The protein composite nano scaffolds for neural repair” project. Yao hopes to create a polymer and protein nanofiber scaffold to promote nerve growth.

Keeping up with WSU the crime log

The Wichita State Police Department (WSUPD) maintains a daily log of incidents on the WSU campus and surrounding area. Each case and its details can be accessed via the Crime Log website on the WSU homepage.

This week, destruction of property, vandalism, and theft were the dominating criminal occurrences.

WSUPD was called to the construction site east of the Hyatt Hotel Friday morning to take a criminal damage report. While the damages are not expected to interrupt construction, the university would like to remind students, faculty and staff to steer clear of construction sites to prevent potential injury.

Later the same day, vandalism was reported at 4040 E Mike Oatman Drive — near Eck Stadium and the Steve Clark YMCA.

Those who commute to campus by car may want to keep a close eye on their spare ties. Outside of campus, near Vassar student housing, WSUPD was called to report the theft of a spare tire from a vehicle.
