Charity hosts second annual Zombie Walk

Charitable giving and zombies collide this Friday at the second annual Zombie Walk. The event is the brainchild of Steven Roseberry, a Wichita resident, and this year’s cause is the Kansas Food Bank.

“I simply feel blessed enough in my own success that doing at least one charity is the least I can do,” Roseberry said. “And a zombie mob seems like the perfect platform to bring people together.”

Last year’s Zombie Walk raised money for Via Christi and The Children’s Miracle Network.

The zombie mob starts gathering around 6 p.m. at the Heskett Center courtyard and the one-and-a-half mile walk starts at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Roseberry has arranged for a special effects artist to be on hand to create zombie faces or wounds for a few dollars.

“Our goal here is to scare hunger,” Roseberry said. “Students need to know all canned food items go directly to the Kansas Food Bank which goes right to the families in the area who need it.”

Roseberry worked with WSU’s Hunger Initiative in planning the event but he alone organizes this event.

“This is an independent event,” he said. “The Hunger Initiative and I sat down and talked about a few ways to help each other be more successful in our fundraising drives.”

Anyone can participate by dropping off canned food items at any of the sponsors’ locations. In doing so, they will receive a 15 percent off coupon to Party City for their zombie needs, Roseberry said. Sponsors for the second annual Zombie Walk include Doc Howards, The Elektrik Chair, Old Town Barber College, 42 Degrees Below, and Thunderbird Tactical.

Additionally, Doc Howards is offering to waive the cover charge on Saturday to anyone who donates five canned food items.
