Wichita State’s Ulrich Museum employee goes for the win

People involved in art usually win for something they drew, painted or sculpted, but not always.

Teresa Veazey won for being the 2012 Marketer of the Year Award. She has been the public relations manager at the Wichita State Ulrich Museum of Art for 10 years.

“There are so many people who have mentored me and have inspired me, both professionally and personally, that I couldn’t begin to name them all here,” Veazey said. “But they believed in me and supported me, and that is what has helped me become a better marketing and museum professional.”

Veazey was presented the award by Craig Davis, president of the Wichita American Marketing Association, at the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center at Newman University in Wichita last month. Veazey said she was surprised and honored to win the award because she was in a field of outstanding nominees.

Over 110 local marketers attended the event. Almost half were competing with Veazey for the title. The nominees were required to complete an application for consideration. A judging committee reviewed the applications before selecting the best from them.

Veazey was also recently named the temporary director of the Ulrich. That position starts in September after current director, Patricia McDonnell, leaves to be the director at the Wichita Art Museum.

“Teresa is an exceptional professional in every way,” McDonnell said. “She is bright, organized, outgoing, connected and a real team player. The Ulrich patrons like and admire Teresa, and she will do wonderfully as the museum interim director.”

The appointment is expected to last three months.

Veazey doesn’t intend to apply for the museum director position and hopes to return to her previous post as soon as a new director starts.

“I work at a great museum with wonderful colleagues so my plan as interim director is merely to continue the Ulrich’s strong events and exhibition schedule through the fall,” Veazey said. “I’m only in the role of interim director temporarily, not permanently, because I love my job as public relations manager and want to continue in that capacity. My plan is to find someone to assist the museum with public relations and marketing from September through December until I transition back to public relations manager at the end of the semester.”
