WSU doubles tam wins at ITA Central Region Championship

Wichita State’s men’s tennis team travelled to Norman, Okla.  this past weekend where Oklahoma University hosted the ITA Central Region Championship.

WSU played well against strong opposition in both singles and doubles play. Even though the Shockers only advanced two of their singles entries past the first round of the main draw, all matches were highly contested.

“We knew that we are good enough to make it to nationals,” senior Tomislav Gregurovic said. “We built up our game after each win and with each win played better with more confidence.”

Sophomore Jocelyn Devilliers wove his way through qualifying play to earn a main draw slot and was finally defeated in a three-set match against Vasilis Stavaropolous (Nebraska).

Gregurovic and Tin Ostojic  both won their first round matches, but only Ostojic would advance further. Gregurovic lost his second round match 6-4, 6-4 to Jack Hamburg (Minnesota).

The No. 10 seeded Ostojic would finally fall when he faced the No. 1 seeded Axel Alvarez in the round of 16, 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles play over the weekend, Ostojic and Gregurovic would get their revenge on the singles playing field.

The duo, seeded No. 7, won three matches on Friday by a combined score of 24-11. This included a big victory over fellow MVC team Drake’s Salibasic/Lott, 8-5.

“We made some changes in our game plan for doubles play,” Gregurovic said. “After last week’s loss at ITA All-American tournament, we had to make a change.”

Ostojic/Gregurovic upset No. 6 Toledo/Corwin (Minnesota) 6-3, 7-5 to earn a spot in the championship match against Oklahoma’s Alvarez/Webb. In Monday’s Championship match Ostojic/Gregurovic upset No. 3 Alvarez/Webb 6-3, 4-6, (10-8).

With the ITA Central Region Championship under their belts Ostojic/Gregurovic will take part in the 20-team doubles draw of the  National Indoor Title, Nov. 6-9 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
