Last road matches for men’s tennis

“Spoiler” alert: In men’s tennis, The Shockers bounced back from the home loss against Drake and spoiled the Bradley Braves’ last home match of the season in a 6-1 defeat.

The Shockers took the doubles point with wins from the duos of Tin Ostojic and Matheus Pereira and Ilija Cuic and Erick Reyes. Even with the doubles point clinches, Tomislav Gregurovic and Guillermo Nicol also won the last doubles match for the sweep.

Pereira won his singles match 6-2, 6-1, and Reyes won his 11th straight singles victory by defeating Kevin Keiner, 6-2, 6-3. Gregurovic, Ostojic, and Nicol all won singles matches decidedly to give WSU a much needed conference win.

In a second match this weekend, WSU played Illinois State. Doubles team Nicol and Gregurovic dropped match while Cuic and Reyes won theirs, leaving the doubles point on senior Pereira and freshman Ostojic, who respond well and give WSU an early lead.

WSU was able to secure the win early after victories from Reyes, Gregurovic, and Cuic. Reyes continued his streak, hiking the string of wins to 12 singles victories in a row. It would have been a much closer match had the Red Birds been able to score early. They pushed Pereira and Ostojic to the third sets of their respective matches and both came out with wins.

After the Shockers come home to end the regular season with a match against Southern Illinois, the team will lose senior captain Matheus Pereira at commencement. The first serve is set for 10 am on April 20.
