Volleyball splits over weekend

The volleyball team was at it again this weekend, matching up against Drake Friday and the University of Northern Iowa Saturday.

While the Shockers beat Drake 3-1 on Friday, the team lost against second-ranked UNI Saturday.

Friday

The first set against Drake was a close one, as the ending score was 26-24 with the win in Wichita State’s favor.

However, before WSU could get the win, there were 10 lead changes throughout the set, with an exchange of points by both teams, until Drake briefly pulled ahead of the Shockers 19-14, using a 5-0 run.

WSU fought back with a 6-1 streak, tying the game at 20, but Drake didn’t go down easily as they rallied against the Shockers until the 24-23 mark, scoring in their favor.

Ashlyn Driskill silenced the Bulldogs at the end of the set using back-to-back kills to tie the set and later win after a Drake hitting error.

The Shockers used the energy from the first win to plow through the second set, jumping to a 7-3 lead via a kill from Mikaela Raudsepp.

WSU extended the lead in the second set with a kill from Driskill, pushing the score to 10-4, but Drake stayed in the game getting as close as four points behind the Shockers at 20-16.

Abbie Lehman and MaryAshton Floyd closed out the set at 25-18 as Lehman had two kills and Floyd utilized her serving game and finished the set with an ace on a 3-0 run.

The third set proved to be a tougher match, as the Bulldogs managed to snag the win from WSU at 26-24.

While Emily Hiebert, Driskill and Jenny Whitledge pushed WSU into the lead multiple times, Drake used a 4-0 run near the end of the set to score the final points, despite the two teams trading points until the end.

Drake used the win to their advantage at the beginning of the third set with an 11-7 lead, but the Shockers responded with a 4-0 run to take the lead at 14-13.

A service ace from Hiebert and another kill by Driskill pushed WSU to a 19-16 advantage after both teams traded points for a bit.

Floyd, who had 14 kills through the entire match, finished the Bulldogs off with four kills at the end of the set giving WSU the win at 25-19.

Lehman, who was also an integral part of WSU offense, had 14 kills as well, while Driskill had 13 and Whitledge 12.

Hiebert contributed to the win with 39 assists and 11 digs as Dani Mostrom led the back row with 29 digs.

Saturday

Saturday’s matchup against the No. 2 University of Northern Iowa did not prove as fruitful for the Shockers, despite career-high ties from Driskill, with 20 kills, and Floyd with 16 kills.

In the first set against UNI, the Shockers started strong, taking a 6-3 lead via a kill from Lehman.

However, UNI took the lead back immediately after with a 4-0 run, making the score 7-6.

Using a kill from Raudsepp and a block from Whitledge and Kristin Byers made their lead 14-11, and a kill by Floyd put the Shockers up 17-12.

After kills from Floyd and Whitledge, the Panthers started dominating the set, scoring 11 of the 13 points exchanged between the teams before the UNI win.

While UNI got the lead early in the second set, kills from Driskill, Jaclyn Roddy and Byers gave WSU a 14-11 lead.

Whitledge extended WSU’s lead to 18-13, but after a few points, a service ace from UNI pulled the Panthers to 20-23 behind the Shockers.

While UNI had back-to-back kills at the end of the game, Floyd pushed WSU to a victory in the second set at 25-22.

In the third set, the Panthers started with the lead again at 15-8, but neither three kills in a row from the Shockers nor back-to-back kills from Driskill could gain enough ground against UNI’s 25-23 win.

The fourth set was much of the same as UNI got the early lead and the win at 25-23, despite Lehman and Floyd both having back-to-back kills.

The Shockers’ sideout average for the fourth set was 70 percent, while their hitting average was .341. The Panthers’ was slightly better at 78 percent sideout and a .333 hitting average.

The WSU volleyball team will play again at 7 p.m. Friday against at Charles Koch Arena against Missouri State.
