Men’s tennis strong in ITA All-American tournament
A starting tournament field of 382 men’s tennis players is now down to 112 at the ITA All-American Tournament in Tulsa, Okla.
Wichita State has made headlines along the way in both pre-qualifying and qualifying rounds.
“This is definitely the toughest tournament to play in,” senior Ilija Cuic said. “There are so many players and so many rounds, everyone is good.”
More than 200 pre-qualifiers took to the courts over the weekend with hopes of moving on.
WSU freshman Miroslav Herzan lasted the longest.
Herzan defeated Shoti Meparidze (NC State) in a three- set thriller 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(5) before moving on to upset ninth-seeded Tomas Hanzlik (Penn St.) 4-6, 7-6(8), 6-4 just hours later.
“I felt a lot of pressure, since this was my first big tournament,” Herzan said. “After my first, I was really tired, and in the second match, I could feel the fatigue. I didn’t move as well, and I cramped, but was able to move on.”
Herzan was the only WSU pre-qualifier to reach Sunday in the tournament, but lost when he faced Brendan McClain (Boise State) 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
“Miroslav played really well,” Cuic said. “I knew he’d be a tough player. He’s a winner, and we needed a player that could figure out how to win the tough matches. He’ll be a great asset for us this year.”
WSU had two other players, lose three-setters in Saturdays pre-qualifying round when Jocelyn Devilliers and Guillermo de Vilchez went down in highly contested matches.
Senior Tomislav Gregurovic and WSU newcomer Sergio de Vilchez both lost in straight sets.
Cuic, seeded 20th, received a first round bye before dropping his match against Frederik Gelbrich (San Diego St.) 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round.
“We have a really good team,” Herzan said. “I think we can make some big things happen this year.”
Stand-out junior Tin Ostojic received an at-large bid in the qualifying round of the tournament and sent home ninth-seeded Jordan Daigle (LSU) in straight sets of his first match 6-2, 7-5.
“I feel good going into the tournament,” Ostojic said. “The whole team has been practicing hard the last couple months. I expected to play well. I feel good both physically and mentally.”
Ostojic faced Kevin Lai (Kentucky) in the second round. A win would earn him a spot in the main draw at the Men’s ITA All-American Championships.
Ostojic was able to win in straights 7-5, 6-0 and is now 5-0 for the year.
The No. 109 ranked Ostojic is now one of 80 players remaining.
Ostojic will face Nicolas Alvarez (Duke) Wednesday morning with first serve at 8 a.m.
