Men’s, women’s tennis gear up for nationals

Wichita State men’s and women’s tennis teams will be put to the test this weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s All-American Tournament.

The men’s team travels to Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Saturday to compete against more than 100 players from across the country over the next nine days.

“We’re fortunate in the fact that it’s in Tulsa, so I’m able to take more of my players to it,” men’s head coach Brad Louderback said. “It’s a prestigious event and even to get into the pre-qualifying round is a good thing. It is definitely one of the tougher tournaments throughout the year as far as everyone across the country coming in.”

The first men’s tournament of the season — held in Midland, Texas, Sept. 18 through 20 — resulted in outstanding play from some of the younger members. Miroslav Herzan and Haru Inoue took home the doubles championship, and freshman Eddie Stoica also had a strong showing, advancing to the semifinals in singles.

Meanwhile, women’s tennis will be sending four players to the ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles. A year ago, WSU won four of the seven singles flights, and the top doubles flight at the All-American Championships with Abby Stevens, Gabriela Porubin, Giulia Guidetti and Luca Pump all winning titles last year.

Women’s head coach Colin Foster said the team hopes to overcome the tribulations endured in their season-opening tournament.

“We’re a bit banged up after last weekend,” Foster said. “There were a lot of matches, so there’s a lot of soreness. But we’ll just have a good week of practice and get back after it this weekend.”

The season opener featured good results for the team’s two ranked players, Julia Schiller and Gabriela Porubin. The duo was able to reach the finals in doubles competition, taking the runner-up spot. Porubin also made it to the finals in the top singles flight, earning her first win of the year over a nationally ranked opponent along the way to her runner-up position.

“We’ve got confidence up and down our lineup,” Foster said.
