WSU baseball get win on windy afternoon

Wichita State red-shirt sophomore Noah Croft hits against SIUE. Shockers won the game 6-1 Tuesday afternoon at Eck Stadium.

No. 22 Wichita State now has a 9-1 record after defeating SIU Edwardsville 6-1 on Tuesday.

Sophomore Preston Snavely pitched for the first five innings with eight strikeouts, recording the highest of the entire game. Freshman Alex Segal went for three innings and freshman Tyler Davis for one.

The first play of the game ended with an out as the Cougars’ Bret Fehr was at bat and flied out to left center field, where junior Travis Young made a saving catch.

The Cougars were the first to score in the top of the third. Aaron Goecks singled to left field and stole second then Jordan Ross singled to center field which allowed Goecks to run home, making the score 1-0.

The game turned around in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Noah Croft homered to right center field, which tied the game 1-1. Immediately after, juniors Jordan Boyer and Luke Ritter both walked. Then while junior Greyson Jenista grounded out to third base, Ritter took second and Boyer took third.

When junior Alec Bohm was batting, Ritter stole third and Boyer scored on a wild pitch, putting the Shockers ahead 2-1.

When freshman Hunter Gibson struckout, Bohm stole second, then junior Mason O’Brien singled to right field for 2 RBIs, letting Bohm and Ritter score at home, with the Shockers still in the lead 4-1.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the eighth inning that the Shockers scored again. Sophomore Jacob Katzfey singled up the middle towards center field, then Croft tripled to right center field for an RBI, bringing Katzfey home which put the score at 5-1.

Soon after, Ritter hit a fly out to left center which allowed Croft to score. This was the last run of the game, giving the Shockers a 6-1 win.

The Shockers will be in Tulsa on Wednesday when they face Oral Roberts at 3 p.m. On Friday at 6 p.m. the team will be back at Eck Stadium to start their series against UT Arlington, and will continue on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
