Wichita State junior Dayton Dugas hits against KU Wednesday evening at Eck Stadium.

Wichita State baseball had a tough weekend as they lost to Houston in a three game series, putting them at 26-12 overall record and 4-8 in the American Athletic Conference.

Game one on Friday came with some challenges from the beginning, and WSU scored their only run in the third inning while Houston put up two in the first.

Junior pitcher Codi Heuer went for eight innings and collected four strikeouts, but it didn’t compare to Houston’s starter with a total of nine after eight innings and only one walk.

The top of the third helped the Shockers put up a run after senior Trey Vickers singled to left field and was out at second, but junior Jordan Boyer was still able to score.

Then Houston responded with their third, putting them ahead 3-1. Both teams struggled the rest of the game, but Houston’s last run in the third kept them in the lead until the end.

The first game in Sunday’s doubleheader ended with a few more runs for both teams. In the top of the third, senior Gunnar Troutwine grounded out to shortstop but Vickers scored.

Junior Greyson Jenista doubled to right center and sent junior Alec Bohm home. Aftewards, junior Dayton Dugas hit a home run out of left field with two RBI, getting Jenista to home plate for a total of four runs that inning.

Houston answered with a home run of their own, but WSU put up another run in the fourth.

Junior Luke Ritter singled through the left side for junior Travis Young to score the fifth run for the Shockers.

Houston scored another run in the sixth and the game ended in the bottom of the seventh after they scored on a walk off home run, taking game two of the series 6-5.

The second game on Sunday was much like Friday’s, but neither team scored until the fifth.

Boyer walked and took second on a wild pitch. Then Young, who was 2-for-3, singled through the left side and sent Boyer to third.

After Ritter flied out to left field, Jenista, who had the team’s only RBI that game, grounded out to first base but, Young advanced to second and Boyer scored at home.

Houston got their bats swinging in the bottom of the inning and put up their first run to even up the score 1-1.

Then the Cougars scored another two runs in the bottom of the sixth, giving them the lead 3-1 for the rest of the game.

The Shockers are on the road Tuesday when they face KU again at 6 p.m., which will be broadcasted on ESPN3. The team will be away again for the weekend as they play UCF in Orlando starting on Friday at 5:30 p.m., then Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and at noon on Sunday.
