The Wichita State women’s basketball team beat the University of Texas-Arlington Mavericks, 71-61 Saturday. It was close throughout, but Jamillah Bonner’s double-double helped the Shockers prevail in the end.

Both teams matched tempo to start the game.
It was fast. The Shockers had a couple errant shots and turnovers, which gave the Mavericks opportunities to score easy layups in transition.
WSU often uses a full-court press on defense to force turnovers. But to begin the game, the Mavericks were able to lob the ball to midcourt and cherry pick the basket.
“Our rotations were slow,” WSU head coach Jody Adams sai after the game. “We didn’t run well out of the press. Their pace was better than ours.”
It was 8-13 quick, but after a WSU timeout, both teams exchanged buckets and the score was 16-17.

The game resumed its earlier pace, and WSU settled into their offense. They passed and rotated the ball, freeing up Allie Decker for threes.

15:00 left in second half
Both teams exchanged buckets to start the half, but the Mavericks were able to regain the lead.
After WSU guard Alex Harden turned the ball over along the sideline, Bonner came to her side and said, “You gotta’ start driving.”
Harden had been quiet in the game to that point, but after the turnover, she helped push the Shockers to a 13-2 run that gave the team a lead.
The Mavericks seemed out of steam at that point, and they struggled to keep pace with the Shockers.
The run was capped off when Harden intercepted a ball going out of bounds and threw it to the opposite side of the court.
Decker, alongside a Mavericks player, raced to catch the ball, and just moments before it bounced out of bounds, Decker grabbed the ball and threw it against the Mavericks to win possession.
It was 53-41.
