Golf tees off Monday

Wichita State golf continues to strive for success, with both teams starting their seasons on Monday.

For the men, Grant Bennett, the 2014 MVC Newcomer of the Year and seven time MVC Golfer of the Week, has one tournament win in 39 appearances. He also has 18 top 10 finishes and a career-best round of 65 strokes.

Senior Max Mason averaged 75 strokes per round in 18 tournaments with a career-low round of 68 strokes, recorded in 2015. Mason averaged 75.80 strokes per round in 18 tournaments. His lowest round was a 68 in 2015.

For the women, senior Samantha Stewart holds four top 20 finishes and two top 10 finishes. In 2014 she tied for seventh for her best career finish.

Senior Maria Alejandra Villalobos returns as an All-Conference player holding 11 top 20 finishes and six top 10 finishes. Her career best round was a 69 finish in 2014.

“All nine players on the roster can play,” junior Taryn Torgerson said. “Winning the conference last year was definitely something to remember, and we have our sights set on repeating. We will just need to make sure we are getting better everyday and playing to our strengths. As long as we stick to our game plan and do what we do best, we will be fine.”

WSU’s three freshman will be contributors to the women’s team this season. The team believes all are capable of helping the Shockers this season.

“Our freshmen class is full of talented woman both in and off the golf course,” assistant coach Alejandra Arellano said. “The girls are coachable and have great desire to get better. They are a great addition to our program and we are confident that they will help our team win tournaments.”

The men, in Austin, Texas, and the women in Huntington, West Virginia, tee off Monday.
