Shockers climb to 19-0

The Wichita State Shockers just keep rolling. After a convincing 68-48 victory over the second best team in the Missouri Valley, the Shockers are at 19-0.

Wichita State was led by sophomore Ron Baker who scored 16 points and added three steals. Fred Van Vleet scored 15 points in the win against the Indiana State Sycamores.

The Sycamores kept it close early with great plays by Dewan Cummings and tied it at eight points.

Then Fred Van Vleet took over. He scored a three-pointer and added in two free throws to bring the lead to 13-8.

Indiana State hung around until the 1:18 mark, when the Shockers started to pull away with layups by Chadrack Lufile and Tekele Cotton.

Wichita State went into the half up 31-22.

The Shockers came out of the locker room on fire and went on an 11-0 run to give them the lead 42-22 and force Indiana State to call a timeout.

The Shockers were in control the rest of the way and got ahead by as much as 28 points after Ron Baker hit a three-pointer.

“To me this win was a statement win,” Ron Baker said. “It put us in the driver’s seat in the [Missouri] Valley.”

Wichita State went on to finish the Sycamores off by a score of 68-48.

“We did not shoot the ball particularly well‑ only 43 percent,” Gregg Marshall said. “But our defense was strong enough for us to get the win.”

The Shockers are next in action at 7 p.m. on Jan. 22  at Illinois State.
